Architecture is a versatile field, shaped by diverse sources of information and data, playing a crucial role in the creation of architectural structures. In times past, instruments such as the sundial were relied upon to obtain data, such as information about the weather and solar influence at different times of the year and geographic locations. This was used to determine the optimal orientation of buildings, which in turn led to benefits such as maximum use of sunlight and greater thermal comfort.

Although cultural, social and even religious factors can influence architectural design, quantitative aspects become particularly relevant when making decisions early in the creative process, during construction and throughout the life cycle of a structure. It is therefore essential to collect and process relevant information, including details on location, solar incidence, occupancy capacity, occupant interactions, energy efficiency and carbon emissions, among others.

In today’s world, technological advances such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning have revolutionized architecture by providing tools for generative design and new ways to collect, process and interpret data. This includes running simulations to create test scenarios and making comparisons between them. These tools enrich the design and operation process with accurate information, driving the evolution and development of the architecture field. For this reason, we have selected some tools and platforms that exemplify the possibilities of applying building information and data software in the architectural field, taking advantage of technological innovations.

A Singapore-based technology company is dedicated to developing AI-driven software products targeted at organizations involved in architecture, urban planning and construction. Their core technology is the DBF engine. They have introduced Urban Insights, an online tool aimed at rapid urban prototyping. This tool works with data from multiple sources, both open and proprietary, allowing design teams and organizations to generate urban scenarios and compare the quality of different locations. DBF collaborates with experts such as Carlos Moreno, who conceived the 15-minute city concept, and institutions such as the Bern University of Applied Sciences, ensuring rigorous scientific evaluation of project analyses.

Sefaira stands out as a tool oriented to analysis in the initial stages of the design process, with the purpose of improving the performance of buildings. It offers enlightening simulations that address aspects such as HVAC sizing, daylighting, thermal comfort, energy consumption and carbon emissions, as well as assessing the potential impact of renewable energy systems. Results are quickly generated using analysis engines. Users can perform comparative analyses of massing, design and envelope options by modeling simple geometries in SketchUp. As a cloud-based platform, it facilitates collaboration between teams and companies on shared projects, allowing review of analysis results.

Technological advances and architecture are not antagonistic concepts. Similar to the 20th century, when architects adopted new construction technologies, such as steel, current generations of architects have incorporated tools such as computer-aided drafting (CAD). It is inspiring to observe the development and consolidation of technologies that mark a milestone in the evolution of architecture. New generations of architects, such as Generation Alpha, will have unprecedented capacity and access to consume and process information. Each technological advancement presents new perspectives to effectively address current and future challenges.

At Alher Sem, we are always committed to remain at the forefront of innovation in the field of construction and development. We strongly believe in the importance of adapting to the latest technological trends and making the most of the tools that drive progress in our industry. Our commitment to excellence and constant search for innovative solutions motivates us to always be one step ahead, ready to address present and future challenges in the construction world. We are excited to continue to explore new possibilities and contribute to the growth and evolution of our field.
