Jeddah Tower resumes construction
The Rising Giant That Will Redefine the Horizon of Saudi Arabia and the World
Construction of the world’s tallest skyscraper resumes in Saudi Arabia after a 5-year hiatus, known as Jeddah Tower, is an architectural and technological landmark taking shape in Saudi Arabia. Located in Kingdom City, nearly 1,000 kilometers northwest of Riyadh, the Saudi capital, this project has become a symbol of the country’s commitment to innovation, ambition and vision for the future. The Jeddah Tower will not only stand out for its impressive height, but also for its advanced engineering and its influence on global architecture.

The Ambition to Surpass the Burj Khalifa
The Jeddah Tower was designed to surpass the iconic Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates, which so far holds the title of the world’s tallest skyscraper. The project was conceived by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and started in 2013. Interestingly, Adrian Smith also played a crucial role in the design of the Burj Khalifa when he worked at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The competition to outdo the Burj Khalifa’s own creator added an extra element of excitement to the Jeddah Tower.
However, the construction of Jeddah Tower has faced multiple challenges and delays throughout its history. In 2018, there was a pause in construction, and subsequently, the COVID-19 pandemic also affected the project’s progress. In addition, the initial contractor was replaced during the 2017-2019 Saudi purge, adding layers of complexity to this monumental undertaking.
The developer behind Jeddah Tower, the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), is committed to complete this ambitious project and has been looking for new contractors to complete it. Several international contractors have been invited to submit full proposals, and an exact timeline for completion of the project is expected to be defined before the end of 2023. Prior to the construction pause, about one-third of the building was already complete, having progressed to level 50 out of 157, with foundation work already completed.

State-of-the-art technology and materials
The Jeddah Tower prides itself on technological innovation and state-of-the-art construction materials. The height of a building is intrinsically linked to the need for a strong and sturdy foundation. Therefore, the choice of the construction site was not accidental. A site with firm ground capable of supporting the immense structure was selected. This is crucial to ensure the stability and safety of the building.
The tower not only defies heights, but also embraces innovation in every aspect of its design and construction. To achieve this, state-of-the-art technologies have been employed, including advanced foundation systems, efficient construction techniques and the highest quality materials. The use of high-strength steel and reinforced concrete allows the tower to stand strong in extreme conditions and withstand the effects of wind and structural loads.
Exterior Design and Architectural Inspiration
The Jeddah Tower is not only an engineering masterpiece, but also an example of elegant and aesthetically pleasing architectural design. Its exterior design features a sloping glass-clad facade inspired by desert palm trees, an element that reflects the tower’s connection to its surroundings and culture.
The skyscraper is conceived as a mixed-use building, housing a diverse range of functions, from a world-class observation deck to a Four Seasons hotel, residences and office space. The Jeddah Tower is part of a major revitalization of Jeddah’s urban core and seeks to optimize residential space with a “three-petal footprint,” which creates a streamlined form that reduces wind load and maximizes space efficiency.
In addition, the tower’s elevator system is expected to be one of the most sophisticated in the world, with impressive ascent speeds of 10 meters per second, providing a unique experience for visitors and residents of the tower.

Saudi Arabia as a Beacon of Architectural Progress
Saudi Arabia has positioned itself as a destination for architectural innovation by collaborating with international architects to transform its cities into examples of progress and modernity. In Jeddah, Heatherwick Studio has unveiled a revolutionary project that transforms an old desalination plant into the center of a new cultural district on the waterfront. This is just one example of how the country seeks to revitalize its urban landscape and promote art and culture.
In 2023, the first Islamic Arts Biennial was held in Jeddah, led by architect Sumayya Vally. The event was held at the famous Western Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz Airport, designed by SOM. This biennial not only highlights the rich Islamic cultural heritage, but also highlights Saudi Arabia’s vision as a global center for art and culture.
In addition, in the country’s capital, Riyadh, the Saudi government has unveiled the design of the Mukaab, a super-tall cube-shaped skyscraper that will become the centerpiece of the New Murabba district in the heart of the city. This demonstrates that Saudi Arabia’s commitment to architectural innovation is not limited to a single project, but spans multiple cities and regions of the country.
The Jeddah Tower has become a beacon of architectural progress in Saudi Arabia and the world. Its construction represents a bold statement of ambition and technological advancement in the field of skyscraper engineering. When finally completed, Jeddah Tower will change not only the skyline of Kingdom City, but will set a new standard in skyscraper architecture worldwide.

This skyscraper will not only be a landmark in terms of height, but also a monument to international collaboration, technological innovation and elegant architectural design. The Jeddah Tower stands as an emblem of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to building for the future, and its completion will mark a historic moment in the history of global architecture.
The impact of the Jeddah Tower extends beyond its impressive physical dimensions. It represents a paradigm shift in the way we conceive and build skyscrapers in the 21st century. Its legacy will live on as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s vision and determination to lead in the skyscraper construction industry and remain a beacon of progress and modernity in the Middle East and around the world.
