The interoceanic corridor
What is this project about?
The Interoceanic Corridor in Mexico is an unprecedented infrastructure project being built in the narrowest area of Mexico between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It will be one of the most emblematic mega-projects of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration and is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy and the development of the Isthmus region and the Mexican southeast.
EThe project consists of a 303 kilometer long strip of land that will connect the ports of Salina Cruz, in Oaxaca, with Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz. This strip will include two deep sea ports, railroads, highways, three airports (Minatitlán, Ixtepec and Huatulco), a gas pipeline and a fiber optic network. According to industry experts, the project will allow the mobility of 1.4 million containers annually and will become an alternative connection between both oceans “more economical and faster than the Panama Canal”.
The project is in its construction phase and is expected to begin operations in 2023. Eduardo Romero Fong, coordinator for the development and strategy of the industrial productive sector and welfare of the Corridor, informed during the Intertraffic Mexico 2022 meeting that the project has advanced significantly. It is expected that by 2050 the project will generate 1.6% of the national GDP, attract 50,000 million dollars in investment and 550,000 jobs in the industrial parks that will be installed along the route.
The Interoceanic Corridor will be crucial to boost the development of the Isthmus and the Mexican Southeast, as it is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy. In addition, the project will be an important magnet for investment, with tax incentives, a free trade zone, customs precincts, tariff reductions, a one-stop shop for paperwork, as well as the development of housing areas and nature reserves.
The construction of the Interoceanic Corridor will also have a significant impact on the communities in the region. The project will place 79 municipalities at the epicenter of the development of this project, which will have a significant impact on wealth and employment. In addition, the project is expected to improve the quality of life of the communities by providing access to services and economic opportunities.
In summary, the Interoceanic Corridor in Mexico is an unprecedented infrastructure project that is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy and the development of the Isthmus region and the Mexican Southeast. The project will be crucial to boost the region’s development and will generate great economic and social benefits for the country.
