The Energy Management System is the part of an organization’s management system dedicated to developing and implementing its energy policy, as well as managing those elements of its activities, products or services that interact with energy use.

The “UNE-EN ISO 50001” standard establishes the requirements that an Energy Management System must have, in order to make continuous and systematic improvements in the energy performance of organizations.

Do you know what an energy management system consists of?

Gestión energética
Gestión energética

At a time when savings and environmental care should be a constant we find energy management as an ally, energy management is the sum of planned measures that are carried out to achieve the highest energy efficiency while maintaining comfort levels in offices and buildings, or production levels in factories.

If we recall energy efficiency aims to reduce energy consumption through efficient energy use, optimizing production processes to produce more goods and services using the same or less energy.

To achieve this reduction objective, there is what is known as Energy Management System (EMS), which is the part of the management system of an organization dedicated to develop and implement its energy policy, as well as to manage those elements of its activities, products or services that interact with the use of energy.

This system is an organized procedure for forecasting and controlling energy consumption, which aims to obtain the highest possible energy efficiency without reducing the level of performance obtained.

Benefits of an energy management system

The effort dedicated by companies in the implementation of an Energy Management System gives them the opportunity to have a self-knowledge that is key regarding the use of energy and what is its potential for savings and improvement.

This self-knowledge provides elements for decision making that will allow them to maintain and increase their competitiveness.

Another issue is that an EMS provides a means to actively manage energy, and to have orderly documentation and reliable records on the savings achieved and on the projects being undertaken to achieve the objectives.

Economically, an EMS allows cost savings and generates a differentiating effect against competitors.

ISO 50001 Certification

Another aspect to be addressed is that an EMS can be certified or not.

Regardless of whether it is certified, an Energy Management System by itself, is always beneficial to the organization because:

  • It allows to identify and prioritize the energy aspects of the organization.
  • Evaluates compliance with all legal requirements related to its energy aspects.
  • It establishes targets for energy efficiency improvement and optimization.
  • Establishes effective procedures for control and monitoring of energy processes.
  • Involves all personnel in energy management.
  • It constitutes an effective tool to follow up actions resulting from energy audits.

Therefore, the certification of an EMS ensures by a third party the systematic control and monitoring of energy aspects and the continuous improvement of energy performance. This contributes to a more efficient and sustainable use of energy, giving confidence in the management system.

The principles of UNE-ISO 50001 are inspired by EN 16001. Therefore, companies certified in 16001 will be prepared for ISO 50001.

The methodology requires the establishment of concrete objectives, placing together actions and resources to control and reduce energy use, verifying energy savings and planning improvements.
